Internal Protection Details Internal Current Limit ThecurrentthroughthehighsideFETissensedonacycle bycyclebasisandifcurrentlimitisreached,itwillabbreviate thecycle.Inaddition,thedevicesensestheFBpintoidentify hardshortconditionsandwilldirecttheVSWoutputtoskip4 cyclesifcurrentlimitoccurswhenFBislow.Thisallowscurrent builtupintheinductorduringtheminimumontimetodecay sufficiently.Currentlimitisalwaysactivewhentheregulator isenabled.Softstartensurescurrentlimitdoesnotprevent regulatorstartup. Underextendedovercurrentconditions(suchasashort), thedevicewillautomaticallydisable.Oncetheovercurrent conditionisremoved,thedevicereturnstonormaloperation automatically.(Alternatelythefactorycanconfigurethe device’sNVMtoshutdowntheregulatorifanextendedover currenteventisdetectedandrequireatoggleoftheEnable pintoreturnthedevicetonormaloperation.) Thermal Shutdown Ifthetemperatureofthedieexceeds170°C(typical),theVSW outputswilltri-statetoprotectthedevicefromdamage.The PGandallotherprotectioncircuitrywillstayactivetoinform thesystemofthefailuremode.Oncethedevicecoolsto160°C (typical),thedevicewillstartupagain,followingthenormal softstartsequence.Ifthedevicereaches170°C,theshutdown/ restartsequencewillrepeat. Reference Soft Start Thereferenceinthisdeviceisrampedatarateof4msto preventtheoutputfromovershootduringstartup.Thisramp restartswheneverthereisarisingedgesensedontheEnable pin.Thisoccursinboththefixedandadjustableversions. Duringthesoftstartramp,currentlimitisstillactive,andwill stillprotectthedeviceincaseofashortontheoutput. Output Overvoltage Iftheoutputoftheregulatorexceeds103%oftheregulation voltage,theVSWoutputswilltri-statetoprotectthedevice fromdamage.Thischeckoccursatthestartofeachswitching cycle.Ifitoccursduringthemiddleofacycle,theswitching forthatcyclewillcomplete,andtheVSWoutputswilltri-state atthebeginningofthenextcycle. |
