Timer Module – TM

Oneofthemostfundamentalfunctionsinanymicrocontrollerdevicesistheabilitytocontroland

measuretime.ToimplementtimerelatedfunctionsthedeviceincludesseveralTimerModules,

generallyabbreviatedtothenameTM.TheTMsaremulti-purposetimingunitsandservetoprovide

operationssuchasTimer/Counter,InputCapture,CompareMatchOutputandSinglePulseOutput

aswellasbeingthefunctionalunitforthegenerationofPWMsignals.EachoftheTMshastwo

interrupts.TheadditionofinputandoutputpinsforeachTMensuresthatusersareprovidedwith

timingunitswithawideandflexiblerangeoffeatures.

ThecommonfeaturesofthedifferentTMtypesaredescribedherewithmoredetailedinformation

providedintheindividualStandardandPeriodicTMsections.

Introduction

ThedevicecontainsaStandardTypeTMandtwoPeriodicTypeTMswhichhaveareferencename

ofSTM,PTM0andPTM1.Althoughsimilarinnature,thedifferentTMtypesvaryintheirfeature

complexity.ThecommonfeaturestoalloftheStandardandPeriodicTMswillbedescribedinthis

sectionandthedetailedoperationregardingeachoftheTMtypeswillbedescribedinseparate

sections.ThemainfeaturesanddifferencesbetweenthetwotypesofTMsaresummarisedinthe

accompanyingtable.

TM Operation

ThedifferenttypesofTMofferadiverserangeoffunctions,fromsimpletimingoperationstoPWM

signalgeneration.ThekeytounderstandinghowtheTMoperatesistoseeitintermsofafree

runningcount-upcounterwhosevalueisthencomparedwiththevalueofpre-programmedinternal

comparators.Whenthefreerunningcount-upcounterhasthesamevalueasthepre-programmed

comparator,knownasacomparematchsituation,aTMinterruptsignalwillbegeneratedwhich

canclearthecounterandperhapsalsochangetheconditionoftheTMoutputpin.TheinternalTM

counterisdrivenbyauserselectableclocksource,whichcanbeaninternalclockoranexternalpin.

TM Clock Source

TheclocksourcewhichdrivesthemaincounterineachTMcanoriginatefromvarioussources.The

selectionoftherequiredclocksourceisimplementedusingthexTnCK2~xTnCK0bitsinthexTMn

controlregisters,where"x"standsforSorPtypeTMand"n"standsforthespecificTMserial

number.ForPTM,thereisaserialnumber"n"intherelevantpinorcontrolbitssincetherearetwo

PTMinthedevice.Theclocksourcecanbearatioofthesystemclock,fSYS,ortheinternalhigh

clock,fH,thefSUBclocksourceortheexternalxTCKnpin.ThexTCKnpinclocksourceisusedto

allowanexternalsignaltodrivetheTMasanexternalclocksourceforeventcounting.
