Serial Interface Module – SIM
ThesedevicescontainaSerialInterfaceModule,whichincludesboththefourlineSPIinterfaceand
thetwolineI2Cinterfacetypes,toallowaneasymethodofcommunicationwithexternalperipheral
hardware.Havingrelativelysimplecommunicationprotocols,theseserialinterfacetypesallow
themicrocontrollertointerfacetoexternalSPIorI2Cbasedhardwaresuchassensors,Flashor
EEPROMmemory,etc.TheSIMinterfacepinsarepin-sharedwithotherI/OpinsthereforetheSIM
interfacefunctionalpinsmustfirstbeselectedusingthecorrespondingpin-sharedfunctionselection
bits.Asbothinterfacetypessharethesamepinsandregisters,thechoiceofwhethertheSPIorI2C
typeisusedismadeusingtheSIMoperatingmodecontrolbits,namedSIM2~SIM0,intheSIMC0
register.Thesepull-highresistorsoftheSIMpin-sharedI/Oareselectedusingpull-highcontrol
registerswhentheSIMfunctionisenabledandthecorrespondingpinsareusedasSIMinputpins.
SPI Interface
TheSPIinterfaceisoftenusedtocommunicatewithexternalperipheraldevicessuchassensors,
FlashorEEPROMmemorydevicesetc.OriginallydevelopedbyMotorola,thefourlineSPI
interfaceisasynchronousserialdatainterfacethathasarelativelysimplecommunicationprotocol
simplifyingtheprogrammingrequirementswhencommunicatingwithexternalhardwaredevices.
Thecommunicationisfullduplexandoperatesasaslave/mastertype,wherethesedevicescanbe
eithermasterorslave.AlthoughtheSPIinterfacespecificationcancontrolmultipleslavedevices
fromasinglemaster,butthesedevicesprovideonlyoneSCSpin.Ifthemasterneedstocontrol
multipleslavedevicesfromasinglemaster,themastercanuseI/Opintoselecttheslavedevices.
SPI Interface Operation
TheSPIinterfaceisafullduplexsynchronousserialdatalink.Itisafourlineinterfacewithpin
namesSDI,SDO,SCKandSCS.PinsSDIandSDOaretheSerialDataInputandSerialDataOutput
lines,theSCKpinistheSerialClocklineandSCSistheSlaveSelectline.AstheSPIinterfacepins
arepin-sharedwithnormalI/OpinsandwiththeI2Cfunctionpins,theSPIinterfacepinsmustfirst
beselectedbyconfiguringthepin-sharedfunctionselectionbitsandsettingthecorrectbitsinthe
SIMC0andSIMC2registers.CommunicationbetweendevicesconnectedtotheSPIinterfaceis
carriedoutinaslave/mastermodewithalldatatransferinitiationsbeingimplementedbythemaster.
TheMasteralsocontrolstheclocksignal.AsthesedevicesonlycontainasingleSCSpinonlyone
slavedevicecanbeutilized.TheSCSpiniscontrolledbysoftware,setCSENbitto1toenableSCS
pinfunction,setCSENbitto0theSCSpinwillbefloatingstate.
TheSPIfunctioninthesedevicesofferthefollowingfeatures:
• Fullduplexsynchronousdatatransfer
• BothMasterandSlavemodes
• LSBfirstorMSBfirstdatatransmissionmodes
• Transmissioncompleteflag
• Risingorfallingactiveclockedge
ThestatusoftheSPIinterfacepinsisdeterminedbyanumberoffactorssuchaswhetherthese
devicesareinthemasterorslavemodeandupontheconditionofcertaincontrolbitssuchasCSEN
andSIMEN.
